Alan Shearer delivers Kieran Trippier verdict as Newcastle beat Tranmere

Alan Shearer has praised Kieran Trippier for his role in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory over Tranmere Rovers.

The right-back started the game on the bench, replaced by Sweden international Emil Krafth. However, he was stretchered off late in the first half, meaning Trippier was called into action.

And the 31-year-old played a staggering role in Eddie Howe’s side turning the tie on its head.

Trippier had an immediate impact. His free kick nearly led to an equaliser, then the resulting corner taken by Trippier was directed in by captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The England international’s ability from set pieces was vital to Newcastle’s cup triumph. The winning goal also came from a corner, with Chris Wood flicking Trippier’s glorious delivery into the far corner.

It was an exquisite performance off the bench from Trippier, and he’s been praised by Shearer.

During the game, Athletic reporter George Caulkin tweeted about having to pinch himself over the fact that Trippier plays for Newcastle.

Shearer responded to the tweet, writing: “He’s very very good.”

That’s probably an understatement from Shearer. It’s incredible how good he is, and it makes it even more unbelievable that he plays for Newcastle.

Trippier changed the game off the bench, which is really impressive when you consider he’s a right-back. His ability on the ball created the chances Newcastle needed to make it past a tricky Tranmere side.

Before his arrival, Howe’s side were struggling. But Trippier turned the tide and his efforts mean Newcastle are in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The game against the League Two side was a potential banana skin, and it looked like an embarrassing defeat was looming. Newcastle weren’t really at it to begin with.

But Trippier came on and everything changed. That’s what happens when you have ‘very very good’ players. He sets the standard for Newcastle now, whether it’s a cup tie against lower league opposition or a Premier League clash with the champions.

He was fantastic on Sunday, and capped off his performance with a wonderful free-kick. Wednesday night was a different prospect, but Trippier still made his mark.
