Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier was expecting one thing from Tottenham and they didn’t let him down

Newcastle United put last week’s blip well and truly behind them at St James’ Park on Sunday smashing six goals past a hapless Tottenham side.

It’s one of those “where were you when….” type of games. Within 21 minutes Newcastle were 5-0 up over their Champions League rivals and the game was already completely over as a contest.

Newcastle switched into cruise control while Tottenham scrambled for answers and it all pretty much what Kieran Trippier expected. He told Sky Sports at full time: “After the result last week, we felt we let our supporters down and so it was about responding well and going after Tottenham today from minute one. 

Trippier says Newcastle were expecting Tottenham to make mistakes

“I thought we did that and we got some early goals. It was about trying to get another, and then another and to try to kill them even more.

“It’s about starting from the front with Alex [Isak], Joelinton and Jacob [Murphy], they’ve got legs and energy. We want to go toe-to-toe with everyone in the league. We knew there would be mistakes in their side today and so we had to be there to take advantage.”

He can say now that they knew there’d be mistakes, but I bet nobody was expecting it to be that easy.

The government’s emergency alert system sounded off on every phone in the country at 3pm and that seemed to wake Spurs up, or at least woke up Harry Kane who scored early on in the second half, but Wilson came off the bench to score with his first touch to restore the five goal deficit.

In pubs all around the region there will be debates going on as to who should get player of the match after that performance. Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak both bagged a brace each, Joelinton scored one and was heavily involved in Murphy’s first. Willock’s pass for Isak’s first made him worthy of the award on its own.

Champions League football is within touching distance now

What a day. A magical, crazy day. All that was missing was a clean sheet, and maybe a goal from Trippier just to put the final nail in the coffin of his former employers.

Still, you can’t have everything, can you?

What we can have though, is Champions League football next season. While still mathematically up in the air, this result has gone a long way to assuring that Newcastle get to hear those operatic tones belted out through the St James’ Park PA system next year.

With four more home games to go before the end of the season, it’s very, very much in our own hands now because no team in the league is going to want to come to St James’ Park to face us now.
