Marc Albrighton admits the Newcastle crowd played a part against Leicester

Newcastle United won 2-0 against Leicester City on Tuesday night, and Foxes midfielder Marc Albrighton has admitted that the crowd made a difference.

The St James’ Park faithful were treated to a rarity last night – a cup quarter final. Eddie Howe’s side took on Leicester for a place in the final four of the Carabao Cup, and it was the Geordies who were celebrating at full time.

It was a special night on Tyneside, as goals from Dan Burn and Joelinton booked Newcastle’s place in the semi finals. They will find out their opponents tonight after the remaining quarter final ties have been played.

But Newcastle will be confident, safe in the knowledge that they will have one home game in the semi final. That is because it is a two-legged affair, which is something the Magpies haven’t experienced since their Europa League run in 2013.

The atmosphere for the semi final, whoever our opponent is, should be electric – just like it was last night against Leicester.

Albrighton admits Newcastle crowd made it ‘difficult’ for Leicester

After the game, Albrighton spoke to Leicester’s official YouTube channel, and was asked why Newcastle were the better side on the night.

“I just think they created more,” he said.

“They got themselves in better positions. Obviously with the crowd behind them in the first half, it was difficult for us to get any hold on the game.

“They got in some good positions, created some good chances. We rode our luck a little bit at times in them early parts. I don’t think we can have too many arguments.”

Hats (or scarves) off to Wor Flags

The scenes before the game were extraordinary. A sea of scarves engulfed St James’ Park, after Wor Flags implored fans to bring them along and do something special for such an important game.

Wor Flags asked. Fans responded. Everywhere you turned there were supporters in black and white scarves, waving them in the air as the players entered the pitch.

It set the tone for the evening, as the fans created an atmosphere that roared the players on to victory.

It is a cliche, but the crowd really can be the 12th man. Albrighton said it himself – it impacted Leicester’s game and stopped them getting to grips with the cup tie.

The players fed off the outstanding atmosphere, and there will need to be more of the same when the semi final comes around.
