Newcastle United kept up their momentum in the Premier League’s run-in by beating Leicester City on Monday night.

Newcastle United went back to fifth in the Premier League by easing to a routine win over the Foxes and now sit just behind fourth-placed Chelsea on only goal difference.

The top five in the Premier League table are on course to earn qualification for next season’s Champions League, while Eddie Howe’s side crucially boast a game in hand on many of the teams also vying for those spots.

Newcastle beat Leicester 3-0 on a night where they really didn’t need to get out of second gear.

The performance wasn’t exactly brilliant, but the Newcastle United manager saw his team do what they needed to do.

Jacob Murphy’s early brace put the game beyond Leicester’s reach. If Newcastle do reach the Champions League again, the winger will have been one of the main reasons why.

Joe Willock responds to Jacob Murphy’s Newcastle brace vs Leicester

The 30-year-old now has seven goals and eight assists in 27 Premier League appearances this season.

Indeed, Murphy now has more goal contributions than Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, who of course Newcastle tried to sign on deadline day last summer.

As such, the Newcastle star was handed the Player of the Match Award and teammate Joe Willock was impressed.

Willock missed the Leicester game through concussion but responded with the words: “What a guy” to Newcastle’s Instagram post about Murphy’s award.

How much did Newcastle United pay for Jacob Murphy?

Murphy joined Newcastle for £12million way back in 2017.

While it has not always been easy for the former Norwich man amid loan spells at the likes of West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday, it’d be fair to say he’s repaid that transfer fee. And then some.

One of the Carabao Cup heroes and vitally important to Howe’s side generally, Murphy has proven to be a real bargain.

Playing his finest football yet, Murphy is again proving the doubters wrong. A new winger may come in this summer but that doesn’t mean he needs to go anywhere.
