Jamie Carragher claims it’s so obvious that Newcastle star is better in another position

Newcastle United’s attacking balance isn’t quite there yet.

While goals have rarely been a problem for Eddie Howe at Newcastle, they cannot quite strike the right balance this time around.

Indeed, the club did not sign the right winger they wanted over the course of the summer and have since had to make do with what they’ve got.

A new signing there is understood to be on the agenda at some point but, for now, there’s not much the Newcastle United manager can do other than look for internal solutions.

To that end, he’s tried Anthony Gordon out on the right with either Joelinton or Harvey Barnes on the left.

That was the case at Nottingham Forest on Sunday too, albeit Gordon and Joelinton did eventually swap places – with the Brazilian scoring a fine goal while out on the right in the impressive 3-1 victory at the City Ground.

Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Jamie Carragher claimed it was obvious Gordon was not playing in his best position while out on the right.

“Anthony Gordon put a great ball, didn’t he, last week for [Alexander] Isak on that right side because there is no doubt for me, he is more comfortable on the left,” he said at 14.39pm GMT.

After Joelinton’s goal, Carragher added: “I said the right had been a problem position for Newcastle. They switch it and Joelinton comes inside. Does that look awkward? No.

“He knows exactly what he’s doing. It’s a brilliant finish from the Brazilian. This could be a massive three points heading into the international break for Newcastle.”

Interestingly, Gordon is believed to have made it clear behind the scenes that he sees himself as a left winger going forward.

Naturally, you’d imagine he could revert there once a new signing comes in, though perhaps Joelinton’s impressive display on the right will see that experiment ended even earlier than that.

The point is, Howe has managed to paper over the cracks. No new signing? Fine, he’s found a solution.

That cannot be taken for granted. It would have been easy to point to the lack of transfers but Howe has found something at Newcastle.
