Sandro Tonali is quickly becoming Newcastle United’s most important player.

He was the player of the match as Newcastle beat Brentford to advance to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. It was another wonderous display from Sandro Tonali, who scored two goals in the first half at St James’ Park.

Newcastle fans hailed Tonali’s performance, and his display was not just about his goals. While it was great to see the 24-year-old find the net, it was another complete performance in and out of possession.

Since replacing Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle United’s deepest midfielder, Tonali has looked revitalised. He finally has a home in Eddie Howe’s side, having previously struggled to make his mark. His quality was clear, but his role in the side was not.

Now that has all changed, and the Italy international has quickly become a guaranteed starter for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe delighted with Sandro Tonali

Alan Shearer praised Tonali’s technique during the win over Brentford, while Eddie Howe was also delighted with the midfield maestro from Milano.

The Newcastle United manager spoke to the Athletic after the game, admitting that Tonali suddenly looks ‘a lot more comfortable’ in a black and white shirt.

“He has an unbelievable strike from distance,” he said.

“He hits the ball cleaner than anyone I’ve seen.

“He’s looked a lot more comfortable deeper on the pitch. It’s brilliant to see from my perspective. He’s an explosive player and he’s really helped us on transitions, putting out a lot of fires with his pace.

“He’s a big signing and you want your big signings to do well. Everyone is seeing what a good player he is.”

Tonali has changed the way Newcastle United play

With Tonali in the ‘six’, Newcastle United are a completely different team.

They are much better at controlling games, with Tonali becoming the orchestrator in the middle of the pitch. He passes the ball with such speed, always aware of what he is going to do before receiving possession.

He keeps Newcastle ticking along. The game goes through him. He very rarely gives the ball away, while his passing range and vision means that opponents never know what he is going to do.

Off the ball, Tonali is also outstanding. His energy is amazing, and he combines his running power with the ability to win back the ball. The way he reads the game before snapping into a tackle is a real joy to watch.

Howe is right – Tonali does suddenly look more comfortable in this Newcastle United team. And Newcastle United look more comfortable thanks to him.

Despite recent talk of Tonali being unhappy, everyone is now seeing how good a player he is, and how important he can be for the Magpies.

Tonali’s celebration proved he is happy, and it is great to see him playing well on a consistent basis as the fans chant ‘ole, ole, ole’.
