Newcastle United supporters were left shocked when Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton were not named in the starting XI against Bournemouth.
Even more surprisingly, neither player featured off the bench as Newcastle drew with Bournemouth.
Following the defeat to Barcelona on Thursday night, Howe decided to rest Bruno. He also left Joelinton out too, with Lewis Miley joining Sandro Tonali in midfield at the Vitality Stadium.
They played the full 90 minutes, with the Newcastle United manager opting to ignore the Brazilian duo who were sat behind him on the bench.

Eddie Howe says Newcastle United are protecting Joelinton
It was particularly surprising to see Howe opt against bringing Bruno on against Bournemouth.
Following the draw, Howe was asked by BBC Sport why he decided not to involve his captain or Joelinton.
“Different stories, really” he said.
“Joelinton we have to really protect from injury. He’s just back, he’s played two games so I didn’t really want to involve him at all today unless I had to.
“Bruno, slightly different. But I think the two midfielders that were playing were doing very well.”
Will Bruno Guimaraes start against Bradford City?
Would Newcastle United have been able to turn a draw into victory had Bruno been involved? Who knows. However, there were moments in the second half that you felt the Magpies could have benefitted from his ability on the ball.
Alas, Bruno took on the role of cheerleader as Newcastle recorded their third consecutive 0-0 draw away from home.
Next up for the Magpies is Bradford City at home, as they begin their defence of the Carabao Cup. They face the League One side at St James’ Park, in what is another opportunity for Howe to rotate his side.
It feels likely that Will Osula will come into the starting XI, and he should be joined by Bruno.
Howe is clearly keen to rotate more than ever this season, which should result in Tonali getting a rest on Wednesday night. In the Italian’s potential absence, Bruno should be restored.
As for Joelinton, the cup clash is another opportunity to protect him. There is no need to risk him for the Carabao Cup third round tie. Instead, he should be saved for what will surely be a hugely physical game against Arsenal on Sunday.
