Eddie Howe now shares Alexander Isak injury update ahead of Newcastle’s game against Fulham

Newcastle United have a fresh injury concern ahead of facing Fulham following their 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday.

Once again, the Magpies were not at their best. However, they were good enough to come from behind as Newcastle United beat Wolves 2-1.

Harvey Barnes’ magnificent strike from distance won it for Newcastle United, after the 26-year-old had been brought on at half time for Alexander Isak.

After a bright start, the 24-year-old had become isolated up front for the Magpies. Isak was struggling to get in the game, as Eddie Howe‘s side lost control.

However, the decision to substitute Isak was enforced rather than tactical.

Why Alexander Isak came off during Newcastle’s win against Wolves

On the stroke of half time, Isak was struck in the face with the ball. As he closed down Craig Dawson, the Wolves centre-back’s clearance deflected off of Isak’s face.

The Sweden international went to ground, and received treatment from the Newcastle United physios.

There was concern when he did not re-emerge for the second half, and Eddie Howe stated that Isak had a problem with his eye.

Eddie Howe comments on if Isak’s injury is serious

Howe knew there and then that he had to come off, and he has now provided a bit more detail on situation regarding Isak.

Following the 2-1 win over Wolves, Howe spoke to Newcastle United’s official app.

“I don’t know the exact details but I think he took a ball to the face and his vision was slightly impaired,” he said.

“So it’s something we’ll look at. We hope it’s not serious but we don’t know.”

What Newcastle will do against Fulham if Isak is unavailable

There will be huge concern if Isak is not fit for Newcastle United’s game against Fulham next Saturday. It is another tricky away game, and the Magpies need their top players fit.

But if Isak is unavailable due to this vision issue, it will put Howe in a difficult position.

He will need to pick someone else to play up front, at a time when Callum Wilson is still out of action with a back injury. It had been hoped that he would be back in training by now, but the 32-year-old is behind schedule.

One player who is fit is Will Osula, but he is yet to make his competitive debut for the Magpies since his £10million arrival from Sheffield United.

Osula knows what he needs to do to be a starter for Newcastle, but it feels as if he is yet to earn Howe’s trust. If he is not getting cameos off the bench, he certainly is not going to start a Premier League game.

Therefore, the likely solution is that Anthony Gordon plays through the middle. That is what happened in the second half against Wolves, with that change allowing match-winner Harvey Barnes to operate down the left.

However, there is hope from Howe that Isak will be available. But nothing is official as it stands, with the club preparing to assess him in the aftermath of Sunday’s win at Molineux.
