Alan Shearer has praised Newcastle United for the ‘shift’ they put in to beat Southampton.
The Magpies came from behind to extend their unbeaten run to nine games, with Bruno Guimaraes netting an audacious winner.
Newcastle went behind via a Stuart Armstrong goal, but rallied before half time to go in level. A wonderful ball in from Jonjo Shelvey was headed home by Chris Wood – his first goal for the club.

Eddie Howe’s side started the second half brightly, and a goal from a set piece gave them the lead. Dan Burn’s header was headed back across goal, allowing Bruno to score his first Toon goal on his first start.
The winner was simply astonishing. The Brazilian produced a back heel volley to hand Newcastle another vital three points.
But while a moment of magic gave us the lead, it was grit and determination that secured the win.

Alan Shearer hails ‘brilliant’ Newcastle
After the game, Toon legend Shearer reacted to the victory on Twitter. He wrote: What a shift that was from the Toon. 3300 amazing fans travel all that way on a Thursday night. Brilliant.”
It was a perfect away performance, and a performance that the travelling fans deserved. To sell out the away end on a Thursday night on the south coast is amazing. It sums up the incredible support Newcastle have.
And the fans were in full voice, as the players battled for their latest victory.

It was backs to the wall defending late in the game. There was some crucial tackles and blocks, while Martin Dubravka reacted when called upon.
The Magpies were sloppy at times in the first half, but the work ethic was always there. The players ran themselves into the ground, which has become the norm since Howe became manager.
The spirit that Eddie Howe has created is fantastic, and it is leading Newcastle to safety with relative ease.
