Newcastle United begin their Premier League campaign away at Aston Villa on Saturday lunchtime.
It has been a difficult summer for Newcastle United, both on and off the pitch.
Quite how much impact pre-season results will have on their Premier League campaign is up for debate, but Eddie Howe’s side did go winless all summer.
The club have also struggled to sign players, while star man Alexander Isak is trying to leave St James’ Park for Liverpool.
Still, there are reasons for optimism. Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale have arrived this summer, and now Malick Thiaw is a Newcastle United player too.
The Newcastle United manager has just led the club to their best season in living memory and did so after an equally challenging summer in 2024.
With that in mind, all hope is not lost – so here’s everything you need to know about the game.

Aston Villa vs Newcastle United team news
Villa will be without goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after his red card at the end of last season. Morgan Rogers should be fit, though Ross Barkley is a doubt.
Summer signing Evann Guessand, who has previously been linked with Newcastle, could make his debut.
Newcastle will be without Isak as his exile continues. Isak wants to leave Newcastle and was not involved throughout pre-season, despite recovering from the “minor thigh injury” that ruled him out of the tour of Asia.

Lewis Hall returned to fitness in a major boost for Newcastle, while Sven Botman played against Atletico Madrid in the final game of pre-season after recovering from a groin complaint. Anthony Gordon should be fit despite taking a knock to the ankle last weekend. Joe Willock is injured, but is not thought to be too far away from a return.
Elanga, Ramsdale and Thiaw could make their competitive debuts for the club. Jacob Ramsey will not be registered in time.
Aston Villa vs Newcastle United prediction
It’s a difficult start for Newcastle. Last season, Unai Emery’s side claimed 40 of their 66 points at home.
Howe’s side do not boast a good record at Villa Park either. They were smashed 4-1 there last time out and have won only one of their last five visits.
Given all that’s gone on this summer, a draw would surely be seen as a good result.
Prediction: Aston Villa 1-1 Newcastle United
Head to head (h2h) history and results
