Anthony Gordon thinks the referee made a ‘clear’ mistake during Newcastle’s win yesterday

Anthony Gordon was on fire during Newcastle United’s 8-0 win against Sheffield United, but he actually thinks it could have been more.

The 22-year-old got himself a goal and an assist at Bramall Lane. He set up the Magpies’ opener when he picked out Sean Longstaff in the box, while he was the one to score Newcastle’s fifth of the afternoon.

It was a tremendous performance from Gordon, who actually started the game on the bench – much to his disappointment.

But an early injury for Harvey Barnes gave Gordon a chance to come on, and he ended up being the best player on the pitch. He was so dangerous, with the Sheffield United players unable to stop him.

In the end, they had to take him out.

During the first half, Gordon appealed for a penalty. He skipped past a Blades player in the box, only to hit the deck in pain.

The referee waved play on and no penalty was given, but replays appeared to suggest that the Toon winger was justified in going to ground.

Now he has spoke about the incident to NUFC TV.

“It’s a clear pen,” he said.

“Have you watched it back? Did it look like a pen? It’s a clear penalty.

“I done him with the faint and I was going on to shoot. He just took me down. I feel like because they gave me the last one maybe…but I thought the ref had a really good game so I’m not going to complain.”

No need for Newcastle to complain

It was a clear penalty, but there is no reason for Newcastle to complain. Even without the spot-kick, they were still able to score eight goals at Bramall Lane.

On top of that, the opening goal was dubious. The ball clearly struck Gordon’s hand in the buildup, but the rules state that because he was not the one who scored and it was not deliberate he was therefore not punished.

Gordon has been involved in some big incidents over the past week. He earned the penalty that won Newcastle the game against Brentford last weekend. We got lucky with that decision, much to the anger of Thomas Frank.

This week a penalty decision incorrectly went against us, but it had no impact on the game.
