With 30 minutes to go in the Newcastle United v Sheffield United game, Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher had already singled out his Player of the Match.
Eddie Howe opted to rest Anthony Gordon against Sheffield United despite him being arguably Newcastle‘s best player this season.
Harvey Barnes was given the nod to flank Callum Wilson against the Blades but his evening was cut short when he pulled up with an injury after just 10 minutes and was replaced by Gordon.
Harvey Barnes was subbed after 10 minutes through injury
For those first 10 minutes of the game, Sheffield United had a couple of good chances to take the lead, but when Anthony Gordon entered the fray it all changed.
Gordon absolutely bossed the game from the second he stepped on the pitch and it didn’t take him long to make an impact.

Keeping the ball in on the byline by the finest of margins, (and via a hand if we’re being honest), Gordon was able to pull the ball back for Sean Longstaff to sweep home and get the scoring underway.
Gordon has been phenomenal for Newcastle this season
Just past the hour mark Anthony Gordon helped himself to the best goal of the game finding the bottom corner from outside of the area prompting Jamie Carragher to single the England U21 international as his Player of the Match despite there being over half an hour to go.

“The defending is absolutely horrific and already after an hour, I’m telling you Gordon is the man of the match.” said Carragher as Sky Sports showed Gordon wheeling away in celebration.
Hopefully the injury to Barnes isn’t a serious one with Manchester City coming up midweek, but if Gordon can carry on this form, how can you drop him?
