Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Anthony Gordon for his role in Newcastle United’s first of eight goals against Sheffield United.

The 22-year-old provided the assist for Sean Longstaff, who gave Newcastle the lead against the Blades at Bramall Lane.

Gordon had not been on the pitch long, having been brought on following an early injury to Harvey Barnes. The summer signing was forced off, handing Gordon the chance to come on after being named on the bench for the first time this season.

The £45milion man latched onto a throw-in from Dan Burn, then did brilliantly to keep the ball in play. Sheffield United appealed that it had crossed the line rather than playing to the whistle, and their protests were ignored by the officials.

Gordon remained composed, and pulled it back for Longstaff to score his first goal of the season.

Jamie Carragher delighted with Anthony Gordon as Sheffield United protest

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was on commentary for Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday, and gave his immediate reaction to Longstaff’s goal.

He explained why the Sheffield United players were so unhappy, but was more impressed with what Gordon did to create the goal.

“They’re not happy, the Sheffield United players,” he said.

“They thought the ball was out. It’s really tight. I’m not quite sure it does go out.

“But it’s brilliant from Anthony Gordon. He’s more alive, he’s switched on from the throw in. The Sheffield United players weren’t.”

What a performance from Newcastle star Gordon

The Sheffield United appeals were understandable. It did look like it had gone out in real time, while the ball also struck Gordon’s hand.

However, replays showed that the ball had stayed in, while the handball was not deliberate. That is why VAR did not intervene following the goal.

While Sheffield United were unhappy, Gordon was delighted. He did brilliantly, getting his second assist of the season.

He was dropped to the bench after a quiet performance at the San Siro, but was absolutely outstanding on Sunday afternoon. As well as getting an assist, Gordon found the net himself, scoring Newcastle’s fifth of the game.

The Toon winger was electric down the left, causing the Blades countless problems. He created chance after chance, and got the vital goal contribution that kicked off an emphatic victory for Newcastle United.
