Newcastle United showed something approaching their very best on Saturday.

Only a week after their performance at Fulham was branded “awful” by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, Eddie Howe’s side raised their game for the visit of Manchester City.

While they only managed a draw in the end, that is still a positive result given the circumstances. Up until that point, Newcastle had proven very underwhelming indeed despite some decent results and went into the game without the services of star striker Alexander Isak.

Still, Anthony Gordon deputised and duly impressed.

The winger, playing as a central striker, both won and scored a penalty in the 1-1 draw and the Newcastle United manager believes his performance proved he’s getting back up to full fitness.

Speaking after the game, Gordon revealed Howe’s delight.

Anthony Gordon now shares what Eddie Howe told his Newcastle players after their draw with Man City

Talking to reporter Andy Sixsmith on social media platform X, Gordon shared that Howe told his players that their performance was something in keeping with what he’s been trying to build at St James’ Park.

Newcastle now have a great chance to go on a run

Howe has some winnable games coming up, which could prove crucial to the season.

First, they take on Wimbledon in the delayed Carabao Cup game, a fixture that offers a real chance to reach the next round. Then, they play Everton in what looks a favourable away trip before hosting Brighton, who they will likely expect to beat at home despite a strong start to the season.

Performances like the one against City are promising. They at least indicate the team haven’t completely forgotten what has made them successful over the last two seasons or so.

There are reasons to be positive about Newcastle again.
