Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup clash against AFC Wimbledon had to be postponed after damage to their pitch.
The Magpies were scheduled to face AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday evening in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
However, flooding at Plough Lane the night before caused the match to be postponed. Both clubs agreed to use St James’ Park as the host venue and the match has been rearranged for next Tuesday, 1 October.
It initially looked likely that Newcastle would get a bye to the next round of the cup with Wimbledon unable to host the match, but a venue swap to St James’ Park has now been agreed.
Wimbledon are set to pocket 45 percent of the proceeds from the match, where Newcastle will hope to fill their 52,000 capacity.

Newcastle United donate £15,000 to Wimbledon fundraiser
The flooding at Plough Lane looked to cause some significant damage to the pitch which will take a lot of time and money to fix.
A JustGiving fundraiser was set up to help raise £100,000 for repairs and it was quickly spotted that Newcastle United donated £15,000 towards that target.
Graham Stacey, the organiser of the fundraiser, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to acknowledge Newcastle’s donation and thank the club.
“The football community rallying around us over the past 24 hours has been really amazing. But this is another level from NUFC. Wow, just wow. And thank you!” He posted.
The money raised from ticket sales at St James’ Park should also help to contribute towards the club’s repairs.
Newcastle United fans send unanimous message
It has been heart-warming to see the footballing world rally together to help get Wimbledon back on track, and Newcastle fans have played a huge part in that.
After it was spotted that the club donated £15,000, fans flooded to social media to unanimously praise the gesture and send a message to club chiefs that they are proud.
The official Newcastle United Supporters’ Club posted: “Proud to be a Geordie. Well done NUFC.”
It was hailed as a “classy gesture” by one member of the Toon Army, while another fan posted: “That’s why I love my club.”
One supporter joked: “It’s the least we can pay for a home cup fixture finally” before adding “In all seriousness though, great to see from my club. Well played NUFC.”
Another suggested that the full gate receipts from the rearranged tie should go to Wimbledon, writing: “Hope NUFC also give Wimbledon the full gate receipts from the game next week. Well done NUFC.”
Finally, one fan posted: “Proud of Newcastle and also proud of football fans.”
There has been a lot of tension around Newcastle’s hierarchy after the summer but it is fantastic to see fans and the club come together for a good cause.
