Ally McCoist has picked out two Newcastle United players for their brilliant performances against Sunderland on Saturday.

It was derby day delight for the Magpies, as Eddie Howe’s side won 3-0 at the Stadium Of Light to move into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

But the most important thing is bragging rights, as Newcastle put an end to their rotten record in derbies. This is the Magpies’ first victory in the fixture since 2011, and it will hopefully prove to be a catalyst for the rest of the season.

It was a must-win game for Newcastle, and they did exactly that with ease. Howe’s men were dominant on Wearside, highlighting the gulf in class between the two clubs.

There were plenty of strong performances in black and white, but commentator Ally McCoist believes two players really stood out for Newcastle.

Whilst commentating on the game for ITV, McCoist hailed Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron for their performances in the derby.

“Guimaraes and Almiron might be the two best players on the pitch this afternoon,” he said.

“The two of them have been fantastic.”

They were immense for Newcastle in the derby

Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron were absolutely tremendous during the 3-0 win over Sunderland.

Miggy certainly deserves a huge amount of praise, as he was under a lot of pressure to perform after a string of poor performances. Fans have been questioning his place in the side and his confidence looked shattered, but he was outstanding at the Stadium Of Light.

His work off the ball was incredible, constantly pinching back possession high up the pitch. That was exactly what happened for the second goal of the game, as he capitalised on a Sunderland mistake before putting it on a plate for Alexander Isak.

As McCoist says, Bruno was spectacular as well. He bossed the midfield, which is exactly what you expect from a Brazil international against a Championship side.

They were definitely Newcastle’s top two performers, but special praise also has to go to Anthony Gordon. The 22-year-old had a brilliant game as well, as the Magpies ended their terrible run of form in sublime fashion against their biggest rivals.
