Mick Quinn says Newcastle need to replace ‘inconsistent’ £21m player in January

Mick Quinn has urged Newcastle United to find a replacement for one of their players in January after struggling to find form.

Newcastle have been very lacklustre in attack over the last two months and a lot of that has been down to the lack of a goal threat coming from Miguel Almiron down the right wing.

Speaking to ChronicleLive, Quinn acknowledged that the Paraguayan has scored some huge goals for Newcastle in his time but claims that he’s too inconsistent to be starting in the team.

Quinn says Newcastle need a bigger goal threat

In a season in which Newcastle have massively struggled with an unexpected number of injuries, Almiron has largely remained one of the more reliable players in the team sheet having not missed a Premier League game this season.

While his work rate and availability has always been so dependable for Eddie Howe, the 29-year-old needs to be putting in greater performances on the attacking side of things.

Almiron has netted just three times in the league this season and provided just one assist, numbers that are simply not good enough for the starting right-winger in a team with European hopes.

Though there is not a lot of money in the budget to go out and sign big-name players, Quinn has urged Newcastle to find a more prolific winger as soon as possible.

On Almiron, Quinn said: “Miguel Almiron has scored some good goals, including that unforgettable one at home against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, but he’s inconsistent so I think we should be looking at recruiting a right winger too.”

Almiron can still be very useful to Newcastle

There are no rumours to replace Almiron in the very immediate future, but it’s definitely an area that Newcastle will look to improve on in the summer at least if not January.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for the Paraguayan international on Tyneside – he will still have a big role to play even if it’s from the bench as his energy and pace can be vital late on in games.

It could even be that Howe may look to utilise him in a more defensive position given his lack of end product in attack and determination to track back for his team.

For now, though, it looks like Almiron will remain Newcastle’s starting right winger and just has to recapture his confidence and his brilliant run of form that he showed last season.
