Alan Shearer got the last laugh as Newcastle United beat Manchester United on Sunday.
It was a massively convincing win for the Magpies, with Newcastle beating Man United 4-1 at St James’ Park to complete their first league double over the Red Devils since 1931.
Eddie Howe’s side were absolutely dominant, with Sunday’s game once again reinforcing Newcastle United’s rise in recent years and Manchester United’s demise.
Whenever the two sides meet, there is always a lot of back and forth between both sets of supporters. That was the case at St James’ Park, with the Man United fans inside the ground quickly mocking Toon legend Alan Shearer.
Those chants were met with cries of ‘Shearer turned you down’ from the Newcastle United faithful, while it was the man himself who got the last laugh.

Alan Shearer sums up Newcastle United’s dominance against Manchester United
Following Newcastle United’s win over Man United, Shearer appeared on The Rest Is Football podcast.
He summed up the match perfectly, explaining why Newcastle United were the superior side by a long distance.
“Newcastle were much the better team than Man United, particularly in the second half,” he said.
“They couldn’t live with the intensity, with the pace and the power of Newcastle. They kept on insisting on playing out from the back, and that suited Newcastle down to the ground. They punished them.
“They really were much the better team, particularly in the second half. They deserved the three points. Once they got the second, it was a matter of how many they were going to get.”
Shearer rejected Manchester United twice
Shearer had two opportunities to have a very different career, turning down the chance to join Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United on two separate occasions.
The first came in 1992, with Shearer moving from Southampton to Blackburn Rovers rather than Manchester United. He would help Rovers win the Premier League, forming an incredible partnership with Chris Sutton.
Shearer then had another chance to move to Old Trafford four years later. In the summer of 1996, Ferguson wanted Shearer again. However, he once again snubbed a move to Man United.
This time it was to come home, as Shearer joined Newcastle United for a world record fee of £15million.
He went on to captain his boyhood club and become the Magpies’ all-time leading goalscorer, but never tasted silverware. In contrast, he would have had a trophy-laden career had he accepted Ferguson’s offer.
However, Shearer does not regret snubbing Man United, and was clearly delighted to see his beloved Magpies get one over them on Sunday.
