Newcastle United player ratings vs Man United as Harvey Barnes fantastic but 8/10 stars made the difference

Newcastle United gave themselves a huge boost in the race for Champions League qualification with a 3-1 win against Manchester United.

It is the first time the Magpies have done the league double against the Red Devils since the 1930/31 season, and they did it in style.

Jason Tindall covered for the hospitalized Eddie Howe on Sunday and did an excellent job in the circumstances alongside Graeme Jones.

Sandro Tonali gave Newcastle United the lead by firing home from Alexander Isak’s tremendous flick. However, Alejandro Garnacho equalised after 37 minutes.

The lead would not last long as Harvey Barnes put his side back in front before scoring his second and the Magpies’ third four minutes after the hour mark.

Bruno Guimaraes added a fourth shortly after to ensure all three points stayed at St James’ Park.

With Newcastle up to fourth and just a point off Nottingham Forest in third place, here is how the players rated in the win.

Nick Pope – 7

After a shaky return to the starting XI, Nick Pope is showing signs of his form from the 2022/23 season. Made multiple impressive stops and was unlucky for Garnacho’s equaliser.

His distribution still leaves a lot to be desired, however.

Kieran Trippier – 7

Mr Reliable once again. The 34-year-old has done an exceptional job while Tino Livramento fills in for the injured Lewis Hall at left-back. Gave young Harry Amass a lot to worry about and gave the ball to Isak for Tonali’s goal.

Fabian Schar – 7

A fantastic week for him after signing his new deal and bagging an assist thanks to an audacious effort against Leicester. Fabian Schar could do very little for Man United’s equaliser but kept his opponents quiet for the remainder of the game.

Forced Chris Kavanagh to brandish a yellow card to Lenny Yoro after he was shoved down in the box before a corner.

Dan Burn – 7

A brave performance once again as Dan Burn continues his dream few weeks. Newcastle needed a hero this season, and the 32-year-old has been exactly that.

Burn was never afraid to get in the wars with the Man United attackers and was even unlucky not to find a back of the net when his header failed over the bar in the first half.

Tino Livramento – 7

The 22-year-old looked good in attacking scenarios but was caught out by a devastating counter-attack, which saw Man United level through Garnacho. Perhaps too eager to win the ball back after losing it shortly beforehand.

Made up for his error with a magnificent cross for the Magpies’ second.

Sandro Tonali – 8

The midfield maestro finds the back of the net for the second time in as many games at St James’ Park. Dropped the shoulder on Yoro before firing past Bayandir. His third goal of the Premier League season.

Joelinton – 7

Caused so many problems for Manuel Ugarte for the first half-hour until losing a duel which began Man United’s counter-attack for the equaliser.

Scored in Newcastle’s last game against Man United at Old Trafford and found the back of the net again, but was ruled out for offside.

He’ll claim the assist for Guimaraes’ goal after snatching Bayandir’s long ball.

Bruno Guimaraes – 8

The Brazilian was allowed to roam around the pitch but still put in a quiet performance. Registered 22 touches in the first half, but it did not feel like that.

A much improved second-half, however. Looked much more lively and was rewarded for his hard work when he scored the Magpies’ fourth.

Harvey Barnes – 9

The 27-year-old needed to impress with Anthony Gordon back on the bench, and did exactly that. Got on the end of Murphy’s cross to give the Magpies back the lead just a few minutes into the second half before bagging his brace with a sensational run.

Was very quiet in the first period, but managed to make up for it with a magical second.

Alexander Isak – 8

Looked much more lively than his performance against Leicester. The Swede bagged his fifth assist of the Premier League season for Tonali’s goal with a marvellous flick over the Red Devils’ defence.

Denied a goal thanks to a brilliant save from Bayandir just after the half-hour mark.

Jacob Murphy – 7

Scored a brace against Leicester on Monday and bagged an assist in the game against Man United to round off a fantastic week.

He will be disappointed by some of his crosses and how quiet he was kept by Amass in the first period, but still gave his teammates a lot to work with during the win.

Only on the pitch for a few minutes.
