Callum Wilson scored his fourth goal of the season for Newcastle United on Sunday, but will feel like he should have got more.

The 31-year-old netted Newcastle’s fourth during a historic 8-0 win against Sheffield United that saw eight different players score for the first time in a Premier League game.

The Magpies were rampant at Bramall Lane, cutting the Blades open at will. It was a game that saw five Newcastle players get their first goals of the season, including Sven Botman. In fact, it was his first ever Toon goal.

For Callum Wilson, his goal against Sheffield United ensured he remained Newcastle’s top scorer this season, having returned to the starting XI after being named on the bench for the Champions League clash with AC Milan.

The number nine continued his good form in the Premier League thanks to a wonderful cross from Kieran Trippier, but Wilson will be well aware that he should have scored more.

The England international squandered plenty of opportunities on Sunday, particularly in the first half. He was wasteful in front of goal, which is not something you have often been able to say about one of the Premier League’s most prolific scorers over the past 12 months.

According to the Athletic, Wilson was actually furious at half time after missing so many chances to score.

At that point, Newcastle were winning 3-0, but Wilson had squandered multiple opportunities that had been put on a plate for him.

The fact he was furious just sums up the type of character he is, and explains why he is such an elite goalscorer. He has an incredible mindset, always striving for more at a personal level.

Wilson is greedy, but in a good way. He wants to be the man. He wants to score goals. However, he was not the man during the first 45 minutes at Bramall Lane, leading to an angry response from the Magpies’ chief marksman.

Fortunately, Wilson did get his goal in the second half, with his strike kicking off the romp that etched Newcastle’s name in the Premier League history books.
