Newcastle United have brought in two players over the past few hours, both of whom play in the same position.
It’s been a frantic few hours for Newcastle, who have sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.
Such was their desperation to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules that do not allow clubs to lose more than £105m over a three-year accountancy period, hard decisions had to be made.
Indeed, they are thought to have held talks with Liverpool over a move for Anthony Gordon, who may now have had his head turned.
Eddie Howe was also reportedly telling PIF not to sell Alexander Isak amid interest from Chelsea, while Kieran Trippier’s sale was discussed just hours before he played for England in the Euro 2024 round-of-16 clash with Slovakia on Sunday.
Still, it’s not all been about outgoings.
Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos followed Lloyd Kelly through the door as Newcastle’s second summer signing and a third has now been added to the squad.
Veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy was said to have been considering an offer from Newcastle after leaving Birmingham and he’s now penned a one-year deal at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe explains why Newcastle have signed John Ruddy
The signing of a 37-year-old on a free transfer from a relegated Championship club isn’t likely to set pulses racing but Howe has shared why Newcastle moved for Ruddy.
“I’m pleased to welcome John to Newcastle United,” he told the club’s official website.
“He has a huge amount of experience and adds a level of support and competition that we need.
“As well as his abilities on the pitch, he has a strong mentality and he is a leader, which will only benefit the group. I’m looking forward to him joining us as we prepare for the season ahead.”
Double deal could see Newcastle sell again
That’s now two goalkeepers signed, with Ruddy surely likely to be the one to act as the replacement for Loris Karius as the third-choice given the stage of his career.
Vlachodimos, at least in theory, could be the man to act as director cover and competition for Nick Pope, who wants to stay this summer despite links with other goalkeepers.
With two new custodians through the door, perhaps Martin Dubravka can now depart.
He’s said to have been told he can leave and the added cover surely makes that an easier process.
