How do Newcastle United tend to perform after international breaks under the stewardship of Eddie Howe?

It’s nearly time for the Premier League to return after the October international break, which has seen nations compete in vital World Cup qualifiers.

Some Newcastle United stars have fared better than others, with Bruno Guimaraes picking up an amazing assist for Brazil and Anthony Gordon earning praise for his England display vs Wales.

Elsewhere, Nick Woltemade struggled for Germany, while Lewis Miley was forced to pull out of the England U21 squad with injury.

Eddie Howe will be hoping the rest of his jet-setting stars will return in one piece ahead of a tough match against Brighton on Saturday.

Newcastle have failed to defeat the Seagulls in their last five meetings, with former winger Yankuba Minteh proving to be a nuisance.

The Magpies can take confidence in their record in matches immediately after international breaks under Howe, though.

Newcastle United have a great post-international break record under Eddie Howe

Howe took charge of Newcastle amid an international break in November 2021, taking the reins over from Steve Bruce.

His first game in charge was a 3-3 draw with Brentford and then Newcastle were smashed 5-1 by Tottenham after the April international break.

Since then, though, Newcastle have tended to win when they return to action.

Howe’s record for Newcastle in games after an international break:

2021-22

2022-23

2023-24

2024-25

2025-26

In 14 games immediately following an international break, Howe has picked up nine wins and drawn twice, with only three defeats suffered.

Can Newcastle United end bad form against Brighton?

Newcastle certainly don’t seem to struggle to get back into the flow of things after an international break, even when key players like Guimaraes and Joelinton have to endure long trips.

The promising trend has continued this season with the 1-0 victory over Wolves, the first of the season, coming after the September break.

However, it is slightly concerning that two of Newcastle’s three defeats in such fixtures came last season.

In a strange quirk of the fixture calendar, the Toon played Wolves and Brighton at the exact same point in 2024-25, too.

They also beat Wolves last term but lost 1-0 at home to Brighton, with former Sunderland man Danny Welbeck haunting them again.

Fabian Hurzeler’s outfit has become a bogey side for Newcastle and it’ll be interesting to see if Howe’s good post-international break form can cancel out their struggles against Brighton.
