Newcastle United have sent seven players out on loan for the 2025-26 season and here is how they are getting on at their clubs.

It was a frantic and frustrating summer transfer window for Newcastle United, with several top targets going elsewhere and Alexander Isak forcing through his move to Liverpool.

Yet, it still ended positively for Eddie Howe, who got his desired firepower in Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, as well as exciting new recruits Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw.

Isak was the most high-profile exit but he was far from the only one, with Sean Longstaff and Martin Dubravka sold and Callum Wilson released.

Seven players also left St. James’ Park on loan for the season, including two first-teamers.

Here’s how they’re performing throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

Matt Targett – Middlesbrough

Matt Targett arrived in the first wave of signings after the PIF takeover in January 2022, initially on loan but he became a permanent signing the following summer.

However, he hasn’t been a regular in the starting XI for two seasons now and, despite some impressive showings in pre-season, will spend the season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Targett already has a goal and an assist to his name on Teesside.

With his contract due to expire in 2026, Targett is unlikely to play for the club again.

Antonio Cordero – KVC Westerlo

Exciting winger Antonio Cordero was Newcastle’s first summer signing in 2025, with the Magpies beating out Real Madrid and Barcelona to secure his signature many months earlier.

Cordero’s contract at Malaga, where he was a regular starter in the second division, expired and he joined Newcastle on a free.

The plan was always to send him out on loan for more first-team action and he joined Belgian side Westerlo for the campaign.

Newcastle had no choice but to spend £20m on Odysseas Vlachodimos, as Nottingham Forest made the demand if they were to buy Elliot Anderson and help the Magpies out of their PSR hole in 2024.

Though necessary, it doesn’t make the move any less galling, given the success Anderson has gone on to have and the fact that the Greek goalkeeper only played 45 minutes last term. He has now joined Sevilla.

Joe White spent last term at MK Dons and was given a chance to impress with the first team during pre-season.

However, he was unable to force his way into Howe’s plans and will instead spend the year in League One with Leyton Orient.

Hopes are high for exciting winger Trevan Sanusi, who made his senior debut in the FA Cup victory over Bromley last season before injury curtailed his campaign.

He’s bagged himself a big loan move to Ligue 1 side FC Lorient, where he’ll be aiming to show he is worth a new Newcastle contract as his current deal expires in 2026.

Young playmaker Travis Hernes was given some minutes in pre-season but also didn’t impress enough to stay with the squad.

The Dane has joined Dutch side Groningen, who have an option to buy him permanently next summer. Hernes will be hoping this loan goes better than his last one at Aalborg, in which he had to apologise for going on a night out after a heavy defeat.
