Newcastle United take on Wolves at St James’ Park on Saturday, and the Premier League have made their refereeing appointments for the game.

The international break is just about over, and Premier League football will soon be back.

Several Newcastle United players have been away for their respective countries, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and new signing Yoane Wissa in action on Tuesday.

In the meantime, Eddie Howe has been preparing his remaining Newcastle players for their next Premier League game against Wolves at St James’ Park. The Magpies are hoping to secure their first win of the season against a side who are yet to pick up a point this season.

Chris Kavanagh to referee Newcastle United vs Wolves

Having felt the wrath of Craig Pawson and John Brookes so far this season, Newcastle now have a new referee who will be officiating them for the first time in the 2025/26 campaign.

On the Premier League website, it has been confirmed that Chris Kavanagh will be the person with the whistle at St James’ Park on Saturday. However, some Newcastle fans will remember him for an incident from the 2022/23 season, which made them boo him off the St James’ Park pitch.

Kavanagh refereed a game between Newcastle and Arsenal in 2023, when the Magpies were deep into the fight for Champions League football.

The Magpies were beaten 2-0 on the day, but that came after they were awarded a penalty in the first half for handball. However, Kavanagh went to the VAR monitor and chalked the decision off, something the fans could not comprehend at the time.

Kavanagh was booed off by the Newcastle fans at full time, and Arsenal secured all three points on the day.

Fans will hope the decisions are clear and obvious when Kavanagh visits Newcastle on Saturday, and no controversy creeps in.

Newcastle United have to get back on track with a win against Wolves

Having failed to pick up a single win in the Premier League this season, Howe will be feeling aggrieved with Newcastle’s league position.

Despite that, Newcastle can take some positives from the three games they have played so far. A solid defensive performance against Aston Villa, while Howe’s players were courageous in their defeat to Liverpool. Elsewhere, the likes of Tino Livramento and Sven Botman really impressed against Leeds United.
