Newcastle legend Alan Shearer names his England squad for the World Cup

Alan Shearer has named his 26-man England squad for the World Cup – and it includes three Newcastle United players.

The likes of Callum Wilson will discover their fate on Thursday, when Gareth Southgate officially announces his squad for the tournament in Qatar.

Until then, the speculation will continue from fans and the media. Who should be on the plane? Who shouldn’t be on the plane?

All that’s left to do is talk about it. There are no Premier League games left for players to stake their claim, just some League Cup ties on Tuesday or Wednesday night which may or may not influence Southgate’s decision.

There are plenty of topics of conversation for fans. Debates will continue on which strikers will go, and whether or not a certain Newcastle transfer target by the name of James Maddison should be selected.

We will find out the answers this week, but now Newcastle legend Shearer has had his say on who he thinks should be in England’s World Cup squad.

Three Newcastle players feature in Alan Shearer’s World Cup squad

In an article for the Athletic, Shearer has named the 26 players he would take to Qatar. And three Newcastle players feature on his list.

Unsurprisingly, Nick Pope is in there. He is one of three goalkeepers chosen by Shearer, alongside Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale. It feels all but certain that they are the three Southgate will go with as well.

The only major decision for Southgate to make is which order does he rank them. Toon fans would call on Pope to be first choice, but the Three Lions boss is probably going to go with Pickford instead.

Into the defence and Shearer has included Kieran Trippier as one of his right-backs. In fact, the Match of the Day pundit thinks the 32-year-old ‘must be one of the first defenders on the team sheet at the moment’. No arguments from us, and Toon co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi will likely agree too given his recent comment on the Newcastle defender.

And finally, Shearer has made the big call and included Wilson in his list of 26. He said recently that the 30-year-old should go, and he still thinks that.

Shearer has given Wilson the edge over Toney, who he thinks could miss out due to being over physical which could hinder him on the international stage.

Based on form, he has to take Wilson. He has been exceptional for Newcastle this season, and is an in-form striker going into a major tournament.

Southgate needs to pick his best players – and that should include the Toon trifecta of Pope, Trippier and Wilson. Let’s hope he agrees with Shearer.
