David Seaman predicts Nick Pope to be in England's World Cup squad

Despite his error on Monday night, David Seaman still thinks Nick Pope will be going to the World Cup with England.

The Newcastle United goalkeeper started in between the sticks against Germany at Wembley, but was at fault for the away side’s late equaliser.

Pope parried Serge Gnabry’s strike from distance into the path of Kai Havertz, who took the golden opportunity to draw the game level.

It was a disappointing night for the Magpies keeper, who was no doubt hoping to nail down a place in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI in the absence of regular number one Jordan Pickford.

However, that didn’t happen. Alas, legendary goalkeeper Seaman still expects Pope to be included in the England squad for this winter’s World Cup.

David Seaman thinks Nick Pope will go to the World Cup

Following England’s 3-3 draw with Germany, Seaman appeared on Sky Sports to discuss the Three Lions’ goalkeeping options.

It looks like Southgate has four candidates, with only three set for a place on the plane to Qatar. And Seaman believes Southgate will choose Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Newcastle’s first choice stopper Pope.

“It’s a tough one, but looking at the experience everyone’s got, unfortunately I think Dean [Henderson] might miss out because he’s not made a lot of appearances for England,” Seaman said.

“It’s his first season back in with Nottingham Forest, so I imagine he’ll be the one that misses out. Fingers crossed no one gets injured because you never know. There’s still a few months to go before the World Cup and you never know what might happen.

“But in Aaron [Ramsdale] and Nick [Pope], you’ve got two guys there that are really close in being number two.”

Pope picked over former Newcastle target Henderson

It seems incredibly likely that Seaman’s choices will be the trio that Southgate picks. That means Henderson will be the one who misses out, despite enjoying a bright start at the City Ground.

However, he could be on a very different path right now. Before Pope arrived at St James’ Park, Newcastle were heavily linked with Henderson. It was even reported that he was close to joining Eddie Howe’s side.

But that changed shortly after Dan Ashworth started work as Sporting Director. 90min claimed during the summer that he put the brakes on Newcastle’s bid to sign Henderson.

The Magpies later brought in Pope for £10million, and certainly aren’t regretting their decision.

Now Southgate has a decision of his own to make, and Seaman expects him to pick Pope over Henderson for the England World Cup squad.
