Bruno Guimaraes delivers message after being left on the bench for Brazil World Cup opener

Brazil kicked off their World Cup campaign with a win over Serbia on Thursday night, and they did it with Bruno Guimaraes sitting on the bench.

It was rumoured before the game that the Newcastle United midfielder wouldn’t be named in the starting XI, with Tite instead opting to play Casemiro and Lucas Paqueta in the middle.

That proved to be the case, with Bruno watching on as the Man United star and his best pal Paqueta started the game.

Brazil went on to win 2-0, and looked rather comfortable by the time the full time whistle sounded. But as the Selecao celebrated, Toon fans began to wonder what they had just witnessed.

Bruno has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season. He has been a star since his £35million move to St James’ Park. Yet somehow he can’t get in this Brazil team.

Tite even made a change to his midfield during the game, but opted to bring on Fred ahead of Bruno. I mean, really?!

Newcastle supporters were disappointed not to see Bruno in action, and now the 25-year-old has commented on the game.

Bruno Guimaraes still living the World Cup dream despite sitting on the bench

Following the win over Serbia, Bruno took to Instagram. He posted a picture of himself observing the Brazilian national anthem before kickoff, providing a message for his fans.

He wrote: “Proud to be here and realizing my dream!! Group win, congrats everyone. We keep on pursuing our goals. Glory to God for everything.”

Based on that, there is no bitterness from Bruno that he did not feature. It is a team game, and hopefully his time will come later in the tournament. Brazil’s next two fixtures are against Fabian Schar’s Switzerland before facing Cameroon in the final group game.

Bruno is living the dream at the World Cup – his first ever major tournament with his country. Fingers crossed his dream gets even greater with some minutes later in the competition.

It was a surprise not to see him feature. With Brazil trying to close the game out and stop Serbia getting back into it, he felt like the perfect player to bring on. Bruno is just as good at keeping the ball as he is winning it back.

But Tite went with Man United player Fred instead…

Meanwhile Bruno watched on as an unused substitute, which is something he has never experienced in a Newcastle United shirt.
