Report: Bruno Guimaraes not likely to start for Brazil v Serbia on Thursday

Brazil kick off their World Cup campaign on Thursday night, with Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes hoping to make his first appearance at a major tournament for his country.

The 25-year-old was the first Toon player to be confirmed for the World Cup, named in Tite’s 26-man squad. It is an elite group of players, one that many believe will win the entire tournament.

Brazil are one of the favourites alongside Argentina, whose stock has dramatically dropped after an embarrassing defeat to Saudi Arabia.

It will be Brazil’s turn on Thursday, as they take on Serbia in their first game of Group G.

Tite has some big decisions to make regarding his starting lineup, and a report from Globo suggests that bad news could be on the horizon for Bruno.

Bruno Guimaraes not expected to start v Serbia

Globo have published Brazil’s likely starting XI for the game against Serbia, and it does not include Newcastle’s star man Bruno.

This Brazil team must be really good if Bruno doesn’t start and Joelinton can’t even get in the squad!

Globo believe Brazil will lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Casemiro being joined in midfield by West Ham player and Bruno’s close friend Lucas Paqueta. Then the four attackers in front of that duo will be Raphinha, Richarlison, Vinicius Junior and Neymar.

Considering how well he has been playing for the Magpies, it speaks volumes about Brazil’s quality that Bruno isn’t a guaranteed starter. In the Premier League, he would probably start for all 20 clubs right now – bar possibly Manchester City.

But if Globo’s team is correct, Bruno will have to wait for an opportunity off the bench to represent his country at the World Cup. Regardless, it will be a very proud moment when Newcastle’s number 39 gets on the pitch.

Toon fans will be watching, and will be desperate to see Bruno feature. We have already seen Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson kickoff their World Cup campaigns in style, and it will be a real joy if Bruno can do the same in a yellow shirt.

His team will be favourites to do just that on Thursday, up against a Serbia side that includes former Toon striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
