Newcastle United have confirmed that the game against Everton on December 28th is now sold out.

It’s set to be the first full house since Rafa Benitez left, and it’ll be the first game of the new free half-season ticket deal. The free tickets were snapped up in no time, with fans desperately clamouring for a chance to watch Steve Bruce’s entertainers…or something like that.

The remaining general sale tickets have all gone, meaning Newcastle vs Everton could see our biggest attendance since Bruce took over.

Dwindling attendances have been a big issue, with only 42,303 at the Southampton game. Many supporters have stayed away after the treatment of Rafa Benitez, with not even wins getting the punters back through the doors.

Bruce has only lost once at St James’ Park, but that hasn’t seen a rise in ticket sales. But numbers are set to increase when Everton arrive on Tyneside, and that’s not because the Toffees are a blockbuster attraction.

The Newcastle hierarchy made the shock decision to give away free half-season tickets, looking to increase the atmosphere inside St James’ Park as they paper over the cracks of their own mistakes.

Nine days after Newcastle announced they would be giving away free tickets, the club have confirmed their first sell out of the season.

Ashley’s decision has been justified. But we’ll have to wait to see if it’s just a short-term solution to a long-term problem. However, I think most of us already know the answer.
