On Monday evening, Newcastle shockingly announced they would be offering free half-season tickets to current season ticket holders.

The application process opened at 10am this morning (10th December), and it seems like the majority of tickets are going to be snapped up.

Out of interest, I joined the queue at 10:10am, just to see how much demand there was for the free 10-game passes. My queue number was 7,797, with 6,546 people ahead of me at 10:20am. The site predicts I have a wait of more than an hour before I’m at the front of the queue.

According to Keith Downie from Sky Sports, there are 10,000 tickets available. So based on the volume of people in the queue, it seems like these tickets are going to be snapped up straight away.

At 10:25am, I left the queue and joined again – this time my queue number was 10,263, which is more than the number of tickets available.

Whether the queue is full of people nominating friends and family for a ticket or people just taking up a seat so that it remains empty, the club’s shock decision to give away tickets has worked. We’ll see on December 28th against Everton to what extent.
