The closer we get to the January transfer window, the more it seems that Newcastle United need to sign a new goalkeeper.
The Magpies are currently without Nick Pope, who underwent surgery earlier this month. He dislocated his shoulder during the 1-0 win over Manchester United, and is now going to be out of action for a few months.
That has led to Martin Dubravka coming back into the side, having been replaced by Pope at St James’ Park last year.
It has been a tough return to the side for the 34-year-old. He has been far from convincing in between the sticks, keeping just one clean sheet and conceding 14 goals in seven games.
The Newcastle defence looks increasingly less comfortable with Dubravka in front of them, which is why the club might see the January transfer window as a chance to sign a replacement.
Newcastle United linked with David De Gea
One player who has been heavily linked is David De Gea. He is currently a free agent after being released by Manchester United at the end of last season.
The 33-year-old is reportedly interested in a move to Tyneside, and various pundits have implored Newcastle to make a move for the Spaniard.
Given his immense talent – Eddie Howe previously called him ‘outstanding’ – and the fact he is a free agent, a move for De Gea makes a lot of sense. However, Newcastle are not completely sold on the prospect of bringing the Premier League winner to St James’ Park.

Why the Magpies are unsure about De Gea
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are considering making a move for De Gea in January. However, they add that there are concerns over the fact that he has been a free agent for the past six months.
Given how long he has been out of the game, it might take him some time to get back up to speed. Can Newcastle afford to wait? They need someone who can make a difference now.
And the fact he is still a free agent is bemusing. He is an excellent goalkeeper, so it is strange that no one has been able to reach an agreement with him. That either suggests that he is demanding too much money, or there just has not been a move that he finds appealing.
Newcastle apparently do appeal, but it remains to be seen if the feeling is mutual. There is some uncertainty from Newcastle’s perspective, and that is no surprise. His wage demands will be high, while he might want a deal for longer than six months. In contrast, Newcastle just want a stopgap until Pope is fit again.
But if Newcastle are serious about signing a goalkeeper then they need to do it quickly, which means they need to make a decision about De Gea very soon.
