Whether Newcastle United have made a new Marc Guehi bid as Crystal Palace close in on £18m deal

Newcastle United are hoping they get the green light to complete a deal for Marc Guehi soon.

The Magpies’ pursuit of the Crystal Palace defender continues, with Newcastle significantly closer to agreeing a deal for Marc Guehi.

But Toon officials are leaving it late, with the transfer window due to close at 11pm on August 30th. Newcastle United are in a race against time to land the 24-year-old, while their position was not helped by Guehi playing for Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

As Newcastle aim to strike an agreement with Palace for Guehi, Oliver Glasner’s side are aiming to make some signings of their own. And they are now closing in on a deal that could potentially have an impact on the Magpies’ quest to bring Guehi to St James’ Park.

Crystal Palace close in on Maxence Lacroix

Newcastle United are not quite as close as Crystal Palace to signing a centre-back.

That is according to the Guardian’s Ed Aarons, who has taken to X to provide an update on Crystal Palace’s attempt to bring Maxence Lacroix in from Wolfsburg.

Aarons has stated that an £18million deal has now been agreed with the Bundesliga club, with a move to Selhurst Park now seemingly on the horizon.

No new Newcastle bid for Marc Guehi

The hope will be that Crystal Palace’s deal for Lacroix opens the door for Guehi to move to Newcastle, but whether or not that will be the case remains to be seen.

Interestingly, Aarons has added on X that Newcastle United have not made a new offer for Guehi ‘as it stands’.

Crystal Palace’s centre-back situation is messy

A new centre-back arriving would ordinarily indicate that Newcastle could be in luck and that the Guehi deal is moving closer. However, Glanser is still yet to replace Joachim Andersen, who left Crystal Palace to sign for Fulham last week.

He will also need to be replaced, while Palace have the added issue of an injury at the back.

10 minutes into their Carabao Cup win over Norwich City on Tuesday night, Glasner was forced to make a change. Central defender Chadi Riad had to be taken off due to injury, and it is unclear how long he will be unavailable for.

After the game, Glasner said: “It looks like something happened with the ligaments his knee but we all hope it’s not too serious. It looked like to me that he will at least miss the Chelsea game on Saturday. But he said it doesn’t look so bad.”

Hopefully it is not a serious injury, as that could majorly disrupt Newcastle’s bid to sign Guehi. That would be a disaster, as the Magpies have now left it very late to target a replacement if the deal collapses.
