Newcastle United’s January transfer guarantee that will delight Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United will be hoping for a much calmer January transfer window after a chaotic summer.

It was a pretty wild summer for Newcastle United, but one they should eventually look back upon fondly. While Alexander Isak did leave to join Liverpool, the Magpies were able to massively strengthen their squad.

Newcastle made six senior signings, adding depth ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League. That was vital after the injury crisis they endured during the 2023/24 season.

For now, Eddie Howe can focus on the football. However, it will not be too long until attentions turn to the January transfer window. That will give Newcastle United another chance to strengthen, although they are not guaranteed to do any business.

Newcastle United have money to spend in January if they want to

However, the opportunity to spend in January is there if the Magpies want it.

According to the Athletic, there ‘absolutely’ is money for Newcastle United to spend during the January transfer window.

While they do not suddenly have a bottomless pit of money, selling Isak for £125million has put Newcastle in an incredibly strong PSR position.

That will be music to the ears of Howe, as the Athletic report that he has been keen to ensure that Newcastle do have capacity to spend in January in case they are in need of reinforcements.

During the previous two January transfer windows, the Magpies have not done any incoming business. The last player to join Newcastle United during a January transfer window was Harrison Ashby in 2023.

What do Newcastle United need to sign in January?

As it stands, it is unclear what Newcastle United need in January. It is too early to tell.

The eventual answer will depend on how the first half of the season goes and whether or not Newcastle suffer any serious injuries.

Newcastle did want another centre-midfielder during the summer, so that is perhaps something they could consider when 2026 arrives.
