That was not the transfer window many were expecting at Newcastle United.
Despite talk of a significant overhaul after a difficult campaign last time out, Newcastle were not able to make a headline signing for the entirety of the summer.
There is at least a chance that some of the arrivals in Lloyd Kelly and Will Osula will be able to bolster the squad and the return of Sandro Tonali should help matters but it’s hard to argue that Eddie Howe has had his squad strengthened.
While those behind the scenes are reportedly stressing that the club remain ambitious, the transfer window has been slammed by club legend Alan Shearer.
Though the fact that spending was down across the Premier League does not excuse Newcastle for a poor window it does however provide some context.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the Premier League’s spending table.

Where Newcastle rank in the Premier League’s spending table in the 2024 summer transfer window
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle sit 18th in the table for money spent this summer (£43m). In terms of money received they rank 11th (£65m) and for net spend, they are fifth (£-22m).
Why Newcastle spent so little this summer
PIF aren’t the only owners who have struggled to splash the cash in a world dominated by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, which do not allow clubs to lose more than £105m over a three-year accountancy period.
Given the fact Everton and Nottingham Forest were both docked points for breaching them last season, it’s obvious that clubs do fear breaking the rules.
Newcastle, after all, came close to a ten-point deduction earlier this summer themselves.
It is frustrating, there’s no doubt about that. Trying to put a positive spin on it feels like doing a PR job for the owners.
Still, context is important. Newcastle have improved their financial position this summer at the very least. Money has been banked and PSR requirements have been met.
Hopefully, things will get better from here…
