Newcastle United are still waiting for the green light to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Negotiations have been going on for a while now, with Newcastle United working on a deal to sign Marc Guehi since the end of July.

Rumours of a move to Tyneside ramped up last week, and there has been growing confidence that Guehi will join Newcastle during this summer’s transfer window.

He would be a blockbuster arrival, and it has been reported that Guehi is keen to sign for Newcastle.

After Newcastle’s opening Guehi bid was rejected, an improved offer has been on the cards. However, it has all gone slightly quiet with regards to the 24-year-old swapping Selhurst Park for St James’ Park.

There had been hope that Newcastle would have signed Guehi this week – possibly in time to feature in the Sela Weekender. Eddie Howe’s side play two friendlies at St James’ Park this weekend, facing Girona on Friday followed by a clash with Stade Brestois on Saturday.

However, a new report suggests that a breakthrough in negotiations could be delayed until after the weekend.

According to the Daily Mail, there is hope that there will be further progress by the start of next week.

That could be when we see a breakthrough, with the Daily Mail adding that Palace understand that they are going to struggle to keep Guehi.

Given the finances involved, it is no surprise to see this deal taking a bit of time. Guehi could be a club record signing for Newcastle, with a transfer worth £65million seemingly on the cards.

But the sooner Newcastle sign Guehi the better, and that is the case for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, until the deal is done, there will be a fear that Newcastle’s bid will be hijacked. Danny Murphy thinks Liverpool will come in for Guehi, for example.

Secondly, Howe will want Guehi to sign in time to train ahead of the Magpies’ first game of the season. That is against Southampton on August 17th – one week on Saturday.

The longer this transfer takes, the less likely it is that Guehi starts that clash with the Saints. Instead, it will likely be Fabian Schar and Dan Burn at the heart of Newcastle’s defence.

The clock is ticking, but there is reportedly hope that a breakthrough could be on the horizon by the start of next week.
