A new shirt number is set to be handed out with Kieran Trippier on the brink of joining Newcastle United.

The 31-year-old will swap Madrid for the North East, with the Magpies agreeing a £12million deal to sign the right-back. Trippier will reportedly earn £130,000-a-week at St James’ Park.

It’s a blockbuster signing for Newcastle, and a real statement of intent by the new owners.

Trippier will walk straight into Eddie Howe’s starting XI, but what number will be on the back of his Toon shirt?

What shirt number has Kieran Trippier wore in the past?

The England defender currently wears the number 23 shirt for Atletico Madrid, and has done ever since his 2019 arrival. He won’t get that number at Newcastle though, with Jacob Murphy currently occupying it.

Before Atletico he was at Tottenham, where he started off as the number 16 – Jeff Hendrick’s current number.

Once Kyle Walker left, he became their number two, a shirt he also had at Burnley when he was managed by Eddie Howe. But again, Newcastle already have a number two – Ciaran Clark.

The international stage doesn’t provide Trippier with a vacant number either. At the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Euros, he wore the 12 jersey for England. That number changed hands over the summer, with Dwight Gayle passing it on to Jamal Lewis.

What shirt numbers are available at Newcastle?

The lowest available number is four. However, it was given to Matty Longstaff a the start of the season before his failed loan move to Aberdeen. He’s now back at the club, but it’s unknown what the future holds for the young midfielder.

Regardless, the number four might be held for a centre-back or centre-midfield arrival.

The other options for Trippier are 13 – unlucky for some, 15, 20, 22, 25 or 28.

Out of those options, the number 22 seems like the best bet. That number previously belonged to right-backs DeAndre Yedlin and Daryl Janmaat. But regardless of his number, it’s just so exciting to see Trippier on the brink of joining the Magpies.
