Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the news that Matty Lonstaff has been recalled from his loan spell at Aberdeen.

The midfielder was sent to the Scottish Premiership side in the summer, in the hope he would get the regular minutes he couldn’t at St. James’ Park.

Last season, fans were disappointed with how little Longstaff featured. He made just five Premier League appearances in total.

A loan move was just what he needed – but his stint in Scotland did not go well.

Unfortunately for Longstaff, the competition was seemingly too strong at Pittodrie (via the Chronicle).

He was never really going to become a regular with the likes of Scott Brown, Lewis Ferguson and others in there vying for minutes.

He made just three starts for the club, with the player also struggling with injury.

Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass said of Longstaff: “He’s gone back after the break was moved forward. We wish him all the best.

“He’s been brilliant around the place and I think he’s enjoyed his time here.”

Eddie Howe will now take a look at Longstaff. A decision will then be taken about whether he’ll head somewhere else for a second loan, or have some first-team involvement.

There appears to be little sadness on the part of Aberdeen fans that he is returning to Newcastle.

And some Toon fans don’t seem particularly struck that he is back at St. James’. The most pressing thing for supporters at the moment will no doubt be the club acquiring some quality players in the next transfer window.
