What Newcastle United now expect Anthony Gordon to do amid Liverpool interest

Newcastle United have a very delicate situation on their hands regarding Anthony Gordon.

The 23-year-old was arguably the Magpies’ best player last season, but the club actually considered selling him late last month.

At a time when Newcastle United were desperate to solve their PSR problem, the prospect of cashing in on Anthony Gordon was floated. That summed up the club’s desperation, as they pondered every possibility to avoid a points deduction.

Luckily, it looks like they have done that without having to sell Gordon, who was offered to Liverpool. However, they opted against a deal due to Newcastle’s £80million+ asking price.

But there have been fears that Gordon’s head has been turned by talk of a move back to Merseyside, which is exactly what the Magpies don’t need as they strive to retain their star players.

Fortunately, the belief on Tyneside is that they will be able to keep Gordon.

That is according to the Northern Echo, who state that Newcastle think they can convince Gordon to stay at St James’ Park with their own investment plans for this summer.

They add that they do not expect the winger to push for a move away from Newcastle, which is what happened when he left Everton. The way his Goodison Park exit played out was not pretty, but it appears that Toon officials are not anticipating a similar situation on this occasion.

Newcastle must show Gordon how much they value him

It is really frustrating that this situation has came about, and it feels like a situation that Newcastle have put themselves in due to their PSR fiasco.

But it is one they can get themselves out of, but they will need to show Gordon some love.

That could and should come in the form of a new contract, with the club expected to hold talks with the Scouser to extend his stay at St James’ Park.

Those talks will be a chance for Newcastle to put their money where their mouth is, and outline to Gordon exactly how valuable he is to them and how he can achieve his goals in a black and white shirt.

The sooner that happens the better, as the last thing the Magpies need is another transfer saga. Toon officials have already been fighting to keep Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, and now they may have a new battle on their hands.
