What Newcastle United need to do to make Elliot Anderson signing possible

Newcastle United may be eager to bring Elliot Anderson back to St. James’ Park, but the chances of that happening are next to zero.

After selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest last summer, we’ve seen the midfielder become one of the most proficient and exciting talents in the Premier League.

Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?

He’s broken through with England, looks destined for the World Cup, and Anderson is now valued at £100m by Forest.

Man United have been linked with Anderson, while Newcastle United are known to be keen to bring him back to the club. But, it doesn’t sound like that’s even possible now.

Reporter shares Elliot Anderson requirements

We already knew re-signing Elliot Anderson would be financially difficult, but the latest on the matter from Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope seems to suggest the deal is nigh on impossible.

On Twitter/X, one fan asked: “What needs to happen to increase our chances of signing Elliot Anderson?”

In reply, Hope said: “Increase revenue to the point of being able to compete for £80-100m players. And offer a genuine chance of winning the Premier League.”

Newcastle have struggled with PSR compliance in recent years, which is the main reason Anderson was sold in the first place.

Revenue would need to increase dramatically, and fast, and that’s just not likely to happen, especially given Newcastle are staying at St. James’ Park for the foreseeable future.

Alternatives to Elliot Anderson are out there

So, we can basically kiss goodbye to the idea of Anderson coming back to Newcastle, then. But, fear not, there are plenty of alternatives out there, and they’re all a lot cheaper.

First of all, Ederson is a great option for Newcastle if they are looking to upgrade on Joelinton. The Atalanta star would cost around £42m and has a brilliant balance of combative play, creative vision, and athleticism.

Newcastle United’s top ten biggest signings ever

Nick Woltemade – £69million

Alexander Isak – £63million

Sandro Tonali – £55million

Anthony Elanga – £55million

Yoane Wissa – £55million

Anthony Gordon – £45million

Jacob Ramsey – £43million

Bruno Guimaraes – £41.5million

Joelinton – £40million

Harvey Barnes – £39million

Just this weekend, it was said that Scott McTominay would be open to joining Newcastle. We are led to believe it might cost around £50m to bring him in from Napoli, but that’s a price worth paying.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have scouted James Garner at Everton. He could be signed for as little as £20m due to his contract running out, which would be a real bargain.
