What Newcastle plan to do in January as Ross Wilson sends clear message to Eddie Howe

In a perfect world, Eddie Howe will be able to strengthen his Newcastle United squad during the January transfer window.

Newcastle United are able to buy and sell players once again, with the most significant deal so far seeing Antonio Cordero join Cadiz on loan.

In terms of incomings, the Magpies are yet to make their mark. It has been reported that Newcastle will move for Dayann Methalie, who is a 19-year-old French left-back.

Methalie would be seen as a player for the future, and that is all Eddie Howe should expect when it comes to new signings in January.

Ross Wilson tells Eddie Howe not to expect major Newcastle United signings in January

This is the first transfer window since Ross Wilson became Newcastle United’s new sporting director, and he will be keen to flex his recruitment muscles.

However, he has already made it clear that big money signings are not on the horizon.

According to the i Paper, Wilson has informed Eddie Howe that Newcastle United are unlikely to make any ‘significant’ January signings.

They state there is ‘little to no chance’ of any major additions, with the only new recruits likely to be project players like Methalie.

It had been claimed that Newcastle could spend up to £50million on one player in January, but that does not appear to be part of Wilson’s plan.

PIF’s approach is unchanged despite new Newcastle United sporting director

If Wilson’s message to Howe remains true then this will be the third January transfer window in a row that Newcastle United have not made any significant signings.

The last major name to arrive at St James’ Park in January was Anthony Gordon, who joined the Magpies from Everton for £45million in 2023. That remains one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever, as the club opted to bring forward one of their planned summer deals.

It remains the case that, under PIF’s ownership, Newcastle United see the summer as the best time to do business. That makes sense, as there is rarely value in the January market and Newcastle are not in a position to waste any resources due to PSR.
