With Champions League football set to return to St James’ Park next season, Newcastle United are braced for a very important transfer window.

Finishing in the top four means that the Magpies can attract better players, and it also means that we can spend more money in the transfer market. There is less strain on financial fair play, with the club’s revenue set to increase.

As it stands, Newcastle are yet to make their first move in terms of signings. The type of player that Eddie Howe wants appears to be clear, with the Magpies eyeing a left-back, a centre-back, two centre midfielders and a wide forward. However, it is undecided who will fill those roles.

Ideally, Newcastle will act fast in the transfer market and get their targets early to ensure they enjoy a full pre-season with their new team. However, that is easier said than done.

No new signings imminent at Newcastle United

According to the Athletic, nothing is particularly imminent at Newcastle United in terms of incomings. They state that the club’s transfer shortlist is more of a long list, with the Magpies undecided on their final list of targets.

At the end of the day, it is all down to money. Newcastle want to get the most out of their transfer budget, with reports stating they could spend as much as £150million on new players.

With at least five players being targeted, that works out at around £30million per signing. So if one target is going to cost closer to £50million, it means the club have less money to spend elsewhere.

It is going to be a balancing act, with Newcastle needing to decide which positions need the most investment – or which targets are worth splashing out for.

Moussa Diaby and Dominik Szoboszlai have both been linked with moves to St James’ Park, but will reportedly cost too much money as it stands. Of course, that could change depending on how the club manages its budget.

Obviously, it is still very early days. The transfer window is not even officially open yet. That happens next week on June 14th.

Nothing is imminent, but hopefully it does not take Newcastle long to spring into action and make some new signings.
