What Kalvin Phillips’ agents are about to do, as Newcastle continue to want to sign him

Representatives of Kalvin Phillips are now set to meet with Manchester City as the midfielder continues to be monitored by Newcastle United.

A host of Premier League clubs have now shown interest in the former Leeds man who has been put up for sale after being deemed surplus to requirements for Pep Guardiola.

Those interested, however, are unhappy at the fee being demanded by City, but according to a report from The Guardian, Phillips‘ agents are set to talk about lowering the fee with last years treble winners.

Newcastle refusing to pay extortionate price for Phillips

Newcastle don’t have a lot of money to start out with, so committing £7m, which is what City are demanding, for a player who will be around for five months doesn’t feel like a sensible move.

The Manchester club are also wanting to include an obligation to buy into his contract, also something Newcastle weren’t keen on, for around £40m which would take up a big portion of the summer budget.

With Joelinton and Sandro Tonali set to return in the summer and Joe Willock expected back in February, Newcastle don’t want to commit to signing another midfielder in the summer when they could spend the money elsewhere.

It isn’t ideal as Newcastle are crying out for a defensive midfielder in their team, but they will hope that these talks between Phillips’ agents and Man City can help their efforts in bringing the 28-year-old to Tyneside.

Other clubs now enter the race for Phillips

As Newcastle have not been willing to go all in on Phillips and explore other options in the market, more teams have now entered the race for Phillips as both Tottenham and Crystal Palace look interested.

Despite the fact that the £45m signing would prefer to stay in the North of England, he could prioritise his career with his national team as he is determined to stay in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Juventus also remain an option for Phillips to play regular first-team football, but for someone who just became a father it would be a huge change of lifestyle and one that he may like to avoid if he can facilitate a move elsewhere in the Premier League.
