Newcastle United are no longer hanging about in the transfer market, as Hugo Ekitike edges towards becoming the Magpies’ latest signing.
A move from Eintracht Frankfurt to Newcastle United always felt impossible for Hugo Ekitike, but that all changed on Monday night.
Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle want to break their transfer record to sign Ekitike. That record currently belongs to Alexander Isak, who is Newcastle’s most expensive signing at £63million.
Newcastle have told Ekitike he would play alongside Isak, despite fears that the Frenchman’s arrival could result in the super Swede departing.
Eddie Howe wants both players in his Newcastle United squad and is getting closer to making that dream a reality.

Hugo Ekitike ready for Newcastle United medical after agreeing personal terms
As Newcastle step up their bid to sign Ekitike, a fresh update from ESPN provides more positive news for the Toon Army.
According to ESPN, Newcastle United have agreed personal terms with Ekitike, who could be on course to sign a five-year deal at St James’ Park. That would keep him at the club until 2030.
The report adds that the 23-year-old is ready to undergo a medical with the Magpies, as he closes in on a move to the club he snubbed twice in 2022.
Newcastle United could finally be making up for lost time, with ESPN adding that a £70million deal is close to being finalised.
Newcastle United’s most expensive signings:
| Alexander Isak | £63million |
| Sandro Tonali | £55million |
| Anthony Elanga | £55million |
How much Newcastle United were going to pay for Hugo Ekitike in 2022
Newcastle United’s history with Ekitike is well documented. On two separate occasions in 2022, he turned down moves to St James’ Park.
In January 2022, he opted to stay with Stade Reims. In the summer of 2022, he chose to move to Paris Saint-Germain.
On both occasions, the Magpies had agreed a fee with Stade Reims for the forward to move to Tyneside. On both occasions, the move broke down due to personal terms.
He was going to be a lot cheaper than he is now. Both deals were worth around £25million, but now he could cost triple that amount.
But that is the premium you have to pay for players of Ekitike’s calibre, and his increase in value only justifies Newcastle United’s initial decision to pursue him three years ago. He is hitting the potential they knew he had, and now he could show off how much he has improved in the famous black and white stripes.
