Newcastle United are prepared to smash their transfer record and make Hugo Ekitike their most expensive signing ever.
The impossible deal could suddenly be possible, as Newcastle United step up efforts to finally sign Hugo Ekitike three years after he turned down a move to St James’ Park on two separate occasions.
Newcastle’s next priority is to sign a striker, and they are aiming to go as big as possible by targeting the Eintracht Frankfurt superstar.
As exclusively revealed to Geordie Boot Boys by transfer expert Graeme Bailey, the Magpies have made it clear they are willing to break their transfer record to bring the 23-year-old to Tyneside.

Newcastle United think they can sign Hugo Ekitike for less than his release clause
Alexander Isak is currently Newcastle’s most expensive signing, costing £63million from Real Sociedad in August 2022. Three years later, Toon officials are ready to spend even more money on a forward.
Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle United are prepared to break their transfer record and pay more than £70million for Hugo Ekitike.
Eintracht Frankfurt have been asking for €100million, but Newcastle and intermediaries believe that it will take €90million (£78million) to get him. We are told that Newcastle have indicated they would be willing to go that high.
Newcastle United’s three most expensive signings:
| Alexander Isak | £63million |
| Sandro Tonali | £55million |
| Anthony Elanga | £55million |
Ekitike has been a Newcastle target ever since his time at Reims and they almost landed him before he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2022.
The forward was very complimentary about Eddie Howe’s side despite snubbing them and Newcastle have kept tabs on the player since he left PSG for Eintracht Frankfurt in 2024.
Newcastle sources have now confirmed that talks have taken place over the weekend and continued with Ekitike’s representatives about a possible deal.
The Frenchman is a target for other Premier League clubs too, with Liverpool and Chelsea keen. Arsenal were admirers as well, but are set to sign Viktor Gyokeres instead.
What Newcastle United have told Hugo Ekitike about Alexander Isak
Newcastle United moving for Ekitike will raise questions over Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park. Some will fear that it could suggest he is on his way out of the club.

However, Geordie Boot Boys understand Newcastle have informed Ekitike’s camp that they want him to play alongside Alexander Isak rather than replace him.
That would hint towards a change of formation for Howe, who has primarily utilised a 4-3-3 shape since becoming Newcastle United manager in November 2021. There have been instances when he has used a front two, with Callum Wilson and Isak playing together.
Now Wilson has left Newcastle United, and he could be replaced by Ekitike. Signing him would be a huge statement of intent, as the Magpies get set to compete in the 2025/26 Champions League.
