Newcastle United look like they are going to beat West Ham United in the race to sign Harvey Barnes, but now the Hammers have the opportunity to get some sort of revenge.
Barnes looked likely to join the Hammers earlier in the summer, but he now wants to sign for Eddie Howe’s side. He has already agreed personal terms, with the Magpies and Leicester now discussing a price.
West Ham are going to miss out, having been forced to wait due to the Declan Rice saga. They were waiting for a cash injection from Arsenal to start their summer spending, meaning they have missed out on key targets.
But now Rice has joined the Gunners, and West Ham have cash to splash.
That could result in signing a defender, and David Moyes has already made a move to sign Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire. However, it is not good news for the Scot.
West Ham make loan approach for Harry Maguire
According to the Guardian, West Ham have asked Man United about signing Maguire on loan. However, the report states that the Red Devils have said no.
They want to sell Maguire, who was removed as club captain at the weekend. A move away looks to be inevitable, but it will not be on loan.
That is bad news for West Ham, who might have to make a sizeable dent to their transfer kitty if they are serious about bringing the 30-year-old to the London Stadium. It is also potentially bad news for the Magpies, who only want Maguire on loan.
However, any West Ham deal for the ‘world class‘ England international would end talk of him moving to St James’ Park – which is probably for the best.
Eddie Howe wants to sign a new centre-back ahead of the new season, which has led to rumours about Maguire. However, he feels like an unlikely target. He will cost too much money, while his wages are astronomical.
In that respect, it would be great news if West Ham could agree a deal for Maguire, as it would at least end talk of him moving to the North East. West Ham look like a much better fit, but it will not be on loan despite Moyes’ approach.
