Reported Newcastle United target Gonzalo Plata would be attainable in the January window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke on GiveMeSport.
As per transfer insider Dean Jones last week, the Magpies already rate the Ecuador international highly. As a result, they are expected to be keeping a watchful eye over the youngster at the World Cup.
O’Rourke now claims Plata could be a realistic signing to arrive on Tyneside this winter.
“It is a position that Newcastle would like to add to, they do want to bring in [a winger],” he said.
“He’s a pacey winger who can play wide on the left.
“I think he could be somebody who could be very gettable this January transfer window.
“Especially with his price tag, I don’t think Real Valladolid would be in any position to turn down any sizeable offer for his signature.”
Plata could join Newcastle in January
Known for his electric pace and dazzling trickery on the ball, the 22-year-old is impressing out in Qatar with the Ecuador national team.
Plata played the full 90 minutes in his country’s opening two group games against Qatar and the Netherlands, in which they’ve come away with four points.
Now likely to be on numerous other clubs’ radars, the Toon, who have long admired the youngster, may face increased competition for the forward.
Leeds United were another side interested in the La Liga attacker prior to the World Cup. According to O Jogo, they saw the Ecuador international as a possible replacement for Raphinha, when he left to join Barcelona.
This comes as little surprise, given he has hailed as ‘exceptional’ and a ‘huge footballer’ by Valladolid coach Pacheta.
Therefore, if Plata continues to impress out in Qatar, Newcastle could look to make a swift swoop in January.
Eddie Howe’s side are keen to bring in a new winger to St James’ Park, and with the 22-year-old’s price-tag expected to be far lower than previous targets, this could be a brilliant acquisition for the Magpies.
