Newcastle United will be keeping an eye on Ecuador international Gonzalo Plata at the World Cup, after it was revealed the club rate him highly.
That’s what journalist Dean Jones has written in his column for GiveMeSport.
The winger will hope to play a major part for his country in Qatar, having featured in the starting XI for their opening game against the host nation this afternoon.
Ahead of the match, Jones took to his transfer column to speak of any players worth monitoring.
For the South American side, he highlighted Plata: the 22-year-old attacker from Real Valladolid.
Touted to become a player we talk about at the top level for years to come, Plata is backed to demonstrate his talents on the biggest stage of world football whilst out in Doha.
According to Jones, the Magpies already rate the Ecuadorian highly. This means they are expected to keep a watchful eye on the youngster over the next few weeks.
However, he also mentions Brighton as a club who may fancy their chances of signing him in January.
Newcastle interested in Plata
Having emerged at Independiente del Valle, Plata rejected the chance to join Manchester City back in 2019 as he favoured a move to Sporting Lisbon.
After a loan spell in Spain last season, the youngster joined Valladolid this summer on a permanent deal.
Known for his electric pace and dazzling trickery on the ball, the 22-year-old is expected to impress at the World Cup. He has been dubbed a ‘brilliant winger’ by journalist Godfred Akoto Boafo, who expects a breakthrough tournament for the player.
Therefore, the Toon will take the opportunity to monitor how he performs, ahead of a potential swoop in the January window.
The Magpies have been linked with numerous wingers since the summer now, with the likes of Moussa Diaby touted with a £60m move.
However, Plata could prove to be a far cheaper option with bags of talent, compared to the Bayer Leverkusen star.
According to O Jogo, Leeds United saw the Ecuador international as a possible replacement for Raphinha, when he left to join Barcelona. Filling the void left by such a huge player, the attacker is sure to have fantastic potential.
Now, with the World Cup ahead, all eyes will be on Plata, as he hopes to impress ahead of the winter window.
