Newcastle United have defied the odds this season by qualifying for the Champions League, and Tim Sherwood believes a title challenge could be on the cards next if the Magpies sign one man – Harry Kane.
The Tottenham Hotspur striker has had a remarkable season, but it has ended once again with no trophies. Despite scoring 32 goals in all competitions, Kane is still yet to end his trophy duck.
It has led to speculation that he could be on the move this summer – but only a small pool of English clubs are in contention.
Manchester United are the favourites, while Chelsea would also be able to afford him and are in need of a striker.
The third club is Newcastle, and Sherwood believes bringing Kane to St James’ Park would make the Magpies the closest challengers to Manchester City next season.

Sherwood has spoke about Harry Kane on Up Front With Simon Jordan on YouTube, and discussed where the England captain could go this summer.
“In the end he will go somewhere where he will win, and I’ll be delighted to see that,” he said.
“I think there’s two real options. It’s impossible that he goes to Arsenal, Chelsea maybe, and if he goes to Manchester United they would be immediately second favourites to win the league behind Manchester City.
“He could even go to Newcastle and it would be the same because he is a difference maker, he scores 20+ goals every season in the Premier League every season.”
Title charge not on the agenda for Newcastle
Sherwood thinks Kane would have the same impact at Manchester United as he would at Newcastle United. However, there is surely no way that the Magpies are going to make a move for the 29-year-old.
First of all, he would cost a club record fee. It has been claimed that Spurs want at least £100million for Kane. While the Newcastle owners do have that kind of money, it would perhaps be unwise to spend it all on a striker – especially when you already have two excellent ones in your ranks in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.
Obviously Kane is a level above, but it would be a real shock to see Newcastle go all out for him to close the gap at the top of the table. The Toon owners will not be looking at how to make the team title contenders. Instead, they will be focussing on how to become a permanent fixture in the top four.
That means improving the squad, rather than bringing in a marquee name like Harry Kane.
