Jason Cundy think Newcastle have an outside chance of landing Harry Kane

Not a summer transfer window goes by without speculation linking Harry Kane with a move away from Tottenham and now it seems Newcastle United are getting dragged into the conversation.

Harry Kane just became England‘s all-time leading goal scorer and is on course to finally break Geordie legend Alan Shearer‘s Premier League record. Wouldn’t it be amazing if he achieved that feat in the black and white of Newcastle?

Well, TalkSPORT‘s Jason Cundy isn’t backing that to happen, but concedes that there is a scenario where Kane ends up on Tyneside, saying: “I don’t think it would be his first choice.

Champions League football could be the key to signing Kane

I am not sure Newcastle would be looking to do any more business up top. I do think it is a bit of a long shot.

“I’m not sure Newcastle would go in for him, and I’m not sure it would be option he would look at if he does move on.

“But if they get Champions League football and who’s to say they wont?…”

Manchester United are the current favourites to take Kane away from Spurs given that of the top six teams who could afford him in the first place, they’re the only side currently in need of an out-and-out goal scorer.

It does seem like the England striker’s time at Tottenham is coming to an end after years of speculation. The club is an absolute mess, currently manager-less after Antonio Conte was sacked at the weekend, there seems, from the outside at least, like there’s disharmony behind the scenes at the club.

Spurs were always unlikely to win trophies having a reputation for being the team that could finish third in a two-horse race. If Harry Kane wants to add trophies to his impressive accolades, he’s going to have to make a move and quickly.

Kane and Isak would be a phenomenal partnership

So, would Newcastle entertain the idea of a move for Kane? At a likely £100million, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility, but I think even our owners would know that he’d be more likely to go to a team with a more trophy-rich history. Therefore any move we make in the summer would be more of a PR stunt by the club to show the world that we mean business by going for the world’s best.

That being said, if Kane has been paying attention to Newcastle over the last 18 months, he’d realise that there’s just as much chance of him winning a trophy here these days as at the other ‘big six’ clubs. He’d also be very aware of what a hero he could become up here if he was to emulate Shearer’s goal scoring antics and succeed where he couldn’t and deliver us silverware.

Alexander Isak could be his Heung-Min Son at Newcastle, forming a deadly partnership that terrorises defences week in-week out. If that doesn’t take us to the next level I’m not sure what would.

But I do have to side with Cundy on this one (there’s a sentence I never thought I’d write), I think he’s beyond our reach this summer. If he sticks it out another year at Tottenham, then who knows? Next summer we could be the most enticing prospect in the league.
