Recently, Newcastle United were linked with a move for the Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule.

It was claimed that the Magpies are keen on the Germany international following the takeover earlier this month.

Newcastle’s defence is currently the worst in the Premier League.

Steve Bruce’s side have shipped an alarming 19 goals in just eight games.

That is three more than bottom club Norwich City.

There was some more poor defending at the weekend against Spurs, in what was Bruce’s 1000th game as a manager.

So someone like Sule – a four-time Bundesliga winner – would very likely bolster the Magpies’ backline.

He’s actually out of contract at the end of the season, meaning there’s a bit of pressure for Bayern to sell in January.

One man who definitely doesn’t hope Sule leaves Bavaria is Thomas Muller.

The 31-year-old has given an interview to Bild about the reported Newcastle target.

He said: “He is currently performing very well again. That’s the crucial thing. If he delivers that, then he’s a very important player for us.

“Once he’s on the move, he’s hard to stop. Also because he already has the agility down low. It’s surprising when a center-back dribbles all of a sudden.”

Sule would be a cracking addition

Sule would be a really exciting signing for Newcastle, who are crying out for quality at the back.

Jamie Carragher expressed his concerns about the backline being Championship standard on MNF last night.

Sule coming in would be a great way of improving the defensive unit.

He is just about to come into his prime years now at the age of 26.

Being at Bayern means he has that winner’s mentality, which is exactly what Newcastle need in the dressing room.

He’s also versatile having operated at right-back on occasion this season – another benefit to signing him.

Muller’s comments perhaps suggest that this is indeed a player Newcastle should be trying to sign.
